A botnet is a combination of the words “robot” and “network”, a botnet is a network of computers that have been infected with a virus, and now are working continuously in order to create security breaches. These attacks come in the form of Bitcoin mining, sending spam e-mails, and DDoS attacks.

Common uses of botnets include:

  • Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks: Overloading a target’s system or network with traffic to disrupt normal operations.
  • Sending spam emails: Using the network of infected machines to send massive amounts of unsolicited emails.
  • Stealing data: Harvesting personal information like usernames, passwords, or credit card details.
